Quick answer
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO (search engine optimization) earns rankings in the list of search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your content shown as the direct answer — in featured snippets, “People also ask” and voice results. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your brand cited or recommended inside AI-written answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. They build on each other.
One question, three places to win
Imagine someone wants to know how to promote a new song. They might type it into Google and scan the results. They might read the answer box at the top and stop there. Or they might ask an AI assistant and receive a written plan that mentions two or three services by name.
Same person, same question, three different ways of getting an answer — and three different ways your business can show up. That is all SEO vs AEO vs GEO really describes.
SEO — be found
Your page appears in the list of results when people search.
AEO — be the answer
Your words are shown or read aloud as the direct answer.
GEO — be recommended
An AI assistant names or cites your brand in what it writes.
SEO: search engine optimization
SEO is the oldest and broadest of the three. It is the work of making a website easy for search engines to crawl, relevant to what people search for, and trusted enough to rank above alternatives.
- What it involves: technical health, keyword research, on-page content, internal linking and earning links from other sites.
- Where you appear: the organic results on Google, Bing and other search engines.
- How it is measured: rankings, impressions, clicks and the leads or sales that follow.
- Strength: traffic that does not cost per click and keeps arriving after the work is done.
- Limitation: it takes time, and a ranking alone no longer guarantees attention when an answer box or AI summary sits above it.

AEO: answer engine optimization
AEO grew out of a change in the results page itself. Search engines began answering questions directly: a featured snippet at the top, a “People also ask” box, a spoken reply from a voice assistant. AEO is the practice of structuring content so yours is the one selected.
- What it involves: researching real questions, writing a direct 40–60 word answer near the top of the page, using lists and tables where they fit, and adding structured data.
- Where you appear: featured snippets, “People also ask”, knowledge panels, voice results and AI summaries in search.
- How it is measured: answer features held, impressions on question queries and rich results earned.
- Strength: visibility above the first ranking, and the authority of being the quoted source.
- Limitation: some answers are read without a click, so success is not always visible as traffic.
Google chooses featured snippets automatically; its documentation is explicit that you cannot mark a page as one. You can only make your answer the clearest available. See AEO services.
GEO: generative engine optimization
GEO is the newest. It deals with assistants that do not return a list or a single quoted passage, but write a fresh answer — and decide which brands and sources to include while doing so.
- What it involves: consistent facts about your business, pages written to be cited, access for AI crawlers, structured data, and mentions on the third-party sources assistants rely on.
- Where you appear: answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and AI features inside search engines.
- How it is measured: how often you are mentioned or cited across a set of test prompts, how accurately you are described, and referral traffic from assistants.
- Strength: a recommendation from a source the user already trusts, at the moment of decision.
- Limitation: no published rules, answers that vary from one request to the next, and no guarantees.

How they fit together
The most useful way to think about SEO vs AEO vs GEO is as three layers of the same building rather than three competing strategies.
SEO is the foundation
If your pages cannot be crawled, load slowly or do not match what people search for, nothing built on top will hold.
AEO is the structure
Clear answers and structured data make well-ranked content easy to extract — by search engines and by AI systems alike.
GEO is the reputation
Consistent facts and third-party mentions give an assistant the confidence to name you.
The overlap is large. An answer written well for a featured snippet is also the passage an AI assistant is most likely to quote. Schema added for rich results also tells a language model who you are. Work on one usually improves the others.
Which does your business need first?
| Your situation | Start with | Then add |
|---|---|---|
| New website, little or no traffic | SEO | AEO as pages begin to rank |
| You rank on page one but competitors get the answer box | AEO | GEO |
| Customers research and compare before buying | AEO and GEO together | Ongoing SEO content |
| You sell expertise (consulting, clinics, software, B2B) | GEO alongside SEO | AEO for common questions |
| Strong brand, but AI describes you wrongly | GEO | A fact and schema clean-up |
For most businesses the honest answer is “SEO first, the other two close behind”. The good news is that they share so much groundwork that doing them together costs far less than doing them separately. That is how I plan them — as one search strategy. FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
No, though they overlap. AEO targets answer features within search engines, such as featured snippets and voice results. GEO targets being mentioned or cited by generative AI assistants that write their own answers.
Do I need AEO and GEO if I already do SEO?
Increasingly, yes. A top ranking can now sit below an answer box or an AI summary. AEO and GEO make sure you are present in those spaces too, and they reuse much of the SEO work you have already done.
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No. People still search, and AI systems draw heavily on the same web pages search engines rank. What has changed is that ranking is no longer the only place to be visible.
Which is cheapest to start with?
AEO is often the quickest win if you already rank well, because it mostly involves restructuring existing content. SEO and GEO both require more sustained effort.
Can one person handle all three?
Yes, and it usually works better that way, because the research, content and technical work overlap. Splitting them across separate providers tends to duplicate effort.
